Makassar Church Bombing

Sacred Heart of Jesus Cathedral, Makassar

Today I was stunned to learn that the church I attended when I lived in Makassar, Indonesia was bombed. In 2006 another church in Makassar was bombed.

It sounds like the bomb went off outside the church but because the church is small people sit outside on the left of the building.

I do recall going to mass their once and hearing people shouting outside. There is religious persecution and discrimination in much of Indonesia. (Anti-semitism is common in this country with less than 500 Jews.)

As I recall the 10:30 am mass was the English mass so there’d be Chinese Indonesians who wanted to practice their English, Filipinos and about 4 or 5 Westerners in attendance. I pray for the recovery of all.

I did email my friend Ria who introduced me to this church. She’s fine and wrote that she sees this terrible incident as the cross they will bear. I think that it may help that this happened as Holy Week begins because they’ll go through the Passion with a deeper understanding.

Indeed. First I surprised it was in “my” old town, then shocked that it was this church.
