Set in Jamaica, Kei Miller’s Augustown is full of local color. There are a couple of storylines: a preacherman claims he can fly and will fly up to heaven, a schoolboy named Kaia gets his dreadlocks cut by a frustrated teacher, Ma Taffy convinces a gang leader to take away the illegal guns he’s hidden under her house, principal Mrs. G befriends Miss G, her housemaid who’s got a big secret.
The writing pulled me in, but some relationships were contrived making me feel a little manipulated as the plot rose to a crescendo of violence. In the end, the violent ending turned me off the story.
