I just applied for a job as a Curriculum Designer for a nonprofit and was surprised by some questions. Even though applicants didn’t have to answer these optional questions, it felt so strange to be asked about:
- Age
- Religion
- Political stance (conservative, moderate or liberal)
- Parenthood, i.e. are you a parent and the ages of your children
- Marital status
I was shocked that they’d even ask. These questions are illegal in the US and the job is located in Chicago.
Are you going to report them?

I’ve asked a friend who’s an HR executive what she makes of it.
